Question New age / Classic TD04 turbo swap

Are there any differences between a 97 TD04 and a new age one ?

I may be swaping one over as mines a bit noisy and wondered if the new age unit is just a stright swap on to my 97 car.

Thanks

MY97 is front entry, new age is front entry... straight swap.

Rumour did have it that the new age turbo's flowed very slightly better at the top end (albeit a very marginal difference). Whether there is any truth to that rumour or not, I don't know.

Either way, they look pretty well identical and will swap with minimal effort.

Cookstar - I believe that the older right-angle entry turbos were the TD05s fitted to earlier cars

Being pedantic, the TD04 did come as right angle entry on the pre 97 WRX wagons

The last couple of classic TD04s I took off had an oil feed bolt (turbo side) with a hole about 4/5mm - that was off some 97 models.
Taking off my newage TD04 before christmas, I found the banjo bolt hole had shrunk to about 1/2mm and was the same size as the VF bolt I wa fitting, which got me confused.
Perhaps the newage TD04s's have a different bearing design that needs a lower oil flow rate and can keep spooling a bit further up the rev range?
Might explain the extra power that newage TD04's "could" be producing?

Nick
