Question crunching in 5th...

hi all, as i do a lot of motorway drivin in my scoob i have found that when giving it some up the slip roads and joining the gearbox always seems to crunch when put in to 5th. if i let the revs drop it seems to be fine. no problems in any other gear.
95 uk turbo with quickshift. cheers.

Mine does the same but only when changing up to 5th above about 95mph and giving it some of the loud pedal. MY00 Turbo.

Common on the MY00's as it was down to bad torque settings on a retaining bolt, though on an MY95, probably points to a worn syncro but id get it checked out by a garage, it could also be low gearbox oil and a top up/refill could solve it

First thing to do is check the gearbox oil, if you are in doubt about its history change it to be sure. I fixed a crunching 5th gear in my MY99 this way as it had crap oil in the box, changed to syntrax and it dissapeared instantly.

If this does to fix it then its probably the 5th gear cluster retaining nut working loose, as said before this is a common problem on 99/00 cars.
To fix entails removing the transfer case including centre diff from the gearbox to replace the nut and asses the damage.

Dan.

By weird coincidence I had the same problem with my Uk turbo MY00. I tried to change from fourth to fifth on the way home yesterday night and it wouldnt engage gear. I could move the gearstick to 5th gear position but just heard crunching and wouldnt engage so had to drive back in 4th gear at lower speed.

But 20 mins into the journey I tried again and it engage 5th no problem?! This morning coming into work I had no problems what so ever.
