Default 6 Speed gearbox in Bug WRX

Who has done this conversion, was it worth the money, and did it improve the drive of the car.

Running approx 280-290 BHP ATM

Gearbox smashed properly tonight and i need to decide what route to go down.

6 speed is mint. I had WRX MY01 for 2 years and loved it. Got MY03 STI PPP now and box is 100 per cent better. Only downside is u r constantly changing gear but u r also always on full boost and do not really need to drop a cog as often.

a friend is running 325/325 in a classic & has had not problems with his 5 speed, can't see a bug being any different unless weight makes it so. Is having his clutch changed soon but I thought that the 5 speed would be ok for your power?

A cheaper alternative would be to get your 5 speed rebuilt with better / stronger insides possibly?

Most 5 speeders hold together fine up until mid-low 300s of torque.

I'm not convinced that the 6 speed ratios would be of benefit if you're still running a TD04, to match the torque spread, earlier spool etc. It is necessary if (like a standard 02STi ) you don't get power until 4k rpm! However, it has been done (and yes it has been done to classics too, although I have no idea how much work is involved)

I am having quite a few things done soon, well not as soon as i hope now , that will take the power quite a bit further than it is now.

Are the terminal speeds different on 5 and 6 speed boxes?

Can I ask your reasons for wanting a 6-speed box?

The 6 speeder on my old STi was good BUT and its quite a big BUT it was a pain in the bum when using the car in anger. You spent more time stirring the mixing bowl than driving .......

Because the six speed can suffer more torque than the 5 speed, So ive been told.

Also previous car was CTR and i did like the 6 spped in that.

And the biggest reason is i need a six speed gear **** to go with the gaitor i have in the car

The car will be for 95% road use, so track etc will not be considered that much when choosing things.

To be honest i doubt i will track her again.

....wait a minute, can I state the obvious?

You had a wrx.

You spent good money to get more bhp......I'm guessing you have put a big spoiler on it and have upgraded the brakes....and now you want a 6 speed box?

Surely you have to admit to buying the wrong car?

I will admit to buyin MY car, the car i could afford at the time!

Thinking back i should have got a STI, but I have spent money on my car getting it how i want it.

I waited years to get an Impreza and am loyal to her

We all do it! In fact I bought a big spoiler for mine back in the day.....

I just see blowing a stack of cash on a WRX as a bit odd considering there is a faster model in the range. I guess it's a good idea to not keep track of how much you have spent too!

until you get used to it Gary then it's fine The 1st ring trip in my STI was a learning curve with the 6 speed but I don't have a problem with it now.

6 speed box is a relatively easy swap. on a uk wrx you will need a UK sti box, linkage and propshaft. 6th gear is a little shorter than your 5th, but nothing to worry about. They handle plenty of power in standard form, the trick is getting a good one, there seems to be an increasing number about for sale with minor faults.

No. Front diff is in the box. You would make sure you have the correct rear diff fitted to match the gearbox

Drive one of my sales cars Mark.

I can answer most of your questions above, but I guess you're looking for independent confirmation.

so if i get this right, swapping for a 6 speed sti gives you a LSD front diff, where as a PPG would not

David - are you up for a groupbuy

Thats odd, cos the price for the 5 and 6 speed clutches was different, so i assumed they where different, unless more labour required to fit them
