Hi all,
I'm after some advice for the problem I have with my Scooby that is really getting me depressed to a point that I don't want to drive the scooby anymore!!!.
Ok, over the last couple of months the car has gradually got worse to start in the mornings. It used to be once a week (or fortnight) now it is every morning. This is the same whether the weather has been fine and dry or raining etc.
Basically the car will do one of these two things:
1. Put key in ignition and wait for the click etc.
Then try and start, car will not fire up at all. Trying this several times and still no joy. Only way to start is with accelerator to the floor then it just starts and continues to be very lumpy until it has warmed up. After this it is ok, until it is left for a number of hours.
2. Put key in ignition and wait for the click.
Check engine light comes on and fan cicks in and does'nt go off.
The only way I can start it is as the same procedure as above.
I'm at the end of my tether, and so don't want to be put off and have to sell the scoob.
I did do a search, and found that It may be either a temperature sensor or a camshaft/crankshaft sensor but don't really know!!!!!.
If it is one of these where abouts are they and are they easy to fit.
Any advice would be appreciated at my time of need.
Cheers

You could check you ECU codes have a look at my site on how to do that, http://www.geocities.com/subman2001nz/ have you changed the spark plugs recently, because they could be due for replacement which will give this sort of problem.

Its almost certainly the water temp sensor.
When it fails, the ECU thinks the car is warm, so doesn't add any extra fuel (as though pulling the choke on in an old car).

Thanks for your words of wisdom in my hour of need.
Submannz.
I changed the spark plugs 2 weeks ago, so I know that they are not the problem. (Yes the gap is the correct size!!!).
Pete C.
You are the Subaru God!!! . I thought that this could be the problem but was not sure, thus the post. It does exactly as you say, when trying to start it's as if there is no "choke" and so will not start, other than with a bit of persuasion.
RobJenks.
Battery is fine just over 12v.
Scoobyboy.
Another confirmation thanks.
Exactly how much of a B*tch is it to fit. Where exactly is it situated (Near radiator, water pump!!!).
Looks like I'm going to have to source a water temperature sensor tommorrow then. :-)
By the way, just thought of this, if this sensor was dicky would it not show up on the water temperature gauge on the dashboard as being already warm. Or is this controlled by another sensor, sorry this is just me readung into to deeply or just being plain thick.
Thanks again.
If this does sort it out I'll post my findings.
I'm a slightly happier chappy.
