Default 53 reg STI - funny front diff noise on full lock

Guys

I have a 53 reg STI. Sometimes when I reverse out of my garage when the car is cold, and I have to have the steering at full lock to get out, the front wheels (mind you I'm sure its just the passenger side front) makes a noise and feels as if its slipping over a bundle of large pebble stones - as if the diff is slipping or something.

Rarely does it when she is heated up a bit through norman driving.

I got a wheel alignment done (a 3d one) and it made no difference.

Whats up it my baby?

Thanks
Ronan

It's ok m8 don't worry very normal on cold tyres. It's the tyres skipping on the ground.

Default Same problem

Just picked my 03 WRX up from its 30K service and have had the same problem as you. Only when the car is cold and reversing on full lock with the wheels being driven you get several loud clunks and the feel that a wheel is "skipping". (Actually accused the wife of kerbing it the other night when she was driving; been in the dog house since!). No cause could be found during the service but a conversation with a guy there revealed that quite a few WR1s are affected by this, due to thrust bearings in the diff. Mine is going back in at the end of Feb to investigate but it looks like its going to need a new diff. Warranty expires early March!

mmmm-will have to keep my eyes open for this. My 53 plate sti did it the other week. Full lock when cold......very loud knocks to the point I thought I had a flat tyre. Got out and checked it and it hasn't happened since.

Warranty expires in September so will have to get it in for a check

I get exactly the same on my classic FWIW. Only noticed it since it's been very cold.

My wife has stood outside the car, and physically seen the tyre skip sideways on the road. This combined with the sound and feeling through the steering wheel at the same time. So it's not any bearing in my case and I have read the same on here before.

No need to worry.
