Question Quailfe Gear Kits

Does anyone know what torque the semi helical and the straight cut Kits are rated at? the website makes no mention.

Would there be any great advantage to using an STI box as a doner other than fitting R180 driveshafts?

Cheers
Dave

When i spoke to Quailfe they would not give to much away on what sort of power the kit would take. If its anything like a certain cossy kit then not that great. IMHO i would go for the PPG kit speak to paul at zen performance from memory its around 2300 and i am sure it will handle the power lots better. Sonds good too.

Check the Quaif gear ratio's, because they are designed for GrpN rally cars, and are VERY short.

PPG is MUCH better for a road car, and correctly built, they are very strong.

My car runs PPG straight cut syncro 3rd/4th, and hasn't failed yet, with circa 600bhp, and 10.41 1/4 mile times, and it's seen over 194mph.

Andy,

I had some "left overs" from another company, who I will NEVER do business with again, and I'd rather not give them any mention.

If you really want to know, I'll pm you.

Had I not have had the bits knocking around, I would have gone with the PPG 1st/2nd.

that sounds like it, always prefer tried and tested.

Uk gear case vs STI case.... is this something to think about?

If so has anyone recently lunched an sti box

For absolute strength you are best to use a six speed casing with a five speed gear kit. Second choice would be the 5 speed casing from the STi which I have used to good effect but now I think the six speed casing beckons.

AFAIK, I'm using an early (pre 97) case.

I don't personally know of anyone who's broken a case, outside of rallying circles, and IMHO, I don't believe they are breaking them due to power, or torque.

The 6 speed case is undoubtedly stronger, but Andy.F, Paul (Zen), Mikee, and I, all seem to be getting away with the 5 speed case.

I accept we may be lucky.

I thought the cases were different, with at least regard to output shaft size. Phase1 inc STI + Ph 1and2 uk can fit with that rear diff and R160 shafts

Ph2 Sti slightly larger with different diff and R180 shafts.

I seem to recall that when i was looking at it to get dccd i would have had to change to an sti box and the whole rear drivetrain unless it was a ph1 dccd which would go straight in to the uk box but have to be left open diff.

Then again I could be way off the mark here

Way off the mark Dave

The output shaft is the same size on all the 5 speeds.

If you put a DCCD in a uk 5 speed, certainly on a phase 2, you need to use the transfer case, DCCD and drop gears from the DCCD box, the rest of the box can remain UK.

My PPG kit is fitted to a UK phase 2 box, with a phase 2 DCCD transfer case, drop gears and DCCD.

Its not that the cases break but a stronger case reduces the possibility of flex in the transmission shafts and holding the shafts as rigidly as possible is the objective.

Thanks, got to learn somewhere

Does the 6spd not also come with quite a weight penalty and the casing would cost a lot more?
