Default no 5th gear!! :(

have posted in general as well so sry for this ,

Driving from a client today, when i went to change to 5th, nothing, as in like i was hitting a wall inside the gears, 1st to 4th fine, no 5th, now adding to this i have had a strange rattling noise for about a week now, and could not find where it was coming from. The rattle was in low revs and sometimes at idle, and when i say sometimes maybe 4 or 5 times over the past week / 10 days, now before i get the funny brigade, i may have answered my own query with the rattle and now no 5th gear, but the rattle still remains.

Any one help please with advice?

Can you get it in reverse? if not it may be the lock nut that is on the end of the shaft, that reverse an fifth sit on, could give API a ring for advice.

Sounds like time for a rebuild... had my old uk classic gearbox rebuilt at teg sport earlier in the year, they took it apart and replaced what ever needed doing with good 2nd's...
cost me £300 quid... was spot on...

I think 5th gear is pretty easy to open up, don't think the whole box needs reconditioned.

Thx all, but i live in Ireland and going to the uk would be a mite expensive, and with only 4 gears working may be pushing it a bit.

That said i will yak to my mechanic late monday, and see what he has found, again thx all for the advice. Thinking with all the mods i have on it a rebuild/strengthing may be the best option!

Well the worst possible news, when the gearbox was checked mass of filings in the oil, 5th gear shredded, and other gears were well worn.

Have ordered a 2nd hand gearbox from Traynors in NI and will be delivered to dublin tomorrow, so hopefully back in my Baby on Sat baring any more mishaps.

700 euros for the gearbox delivered, so im hoping all told around 1k-1.2k all in(sry dont know the exchange rate)

So again thx for all the advice, and help.
