Default leaking gearbox oil

My 97 uk impreza seems to be leaking gearbox oil from the drivers side where the shaft connects to the box, will it just need new seals and is it an easy job.also have go a squeek on front near side wheel when im moving slowly i.e. in traffic but if u touch the brakes ever so slightly it stops. ive had new brakes. could it be the wheel bearing.

Just replace the drive shaft seal,If i remember right you can get the in board cv joint off the splines by knocking the roll pin out,if not just take the bottom ball joint out the arm knock the pin out and push it back then you can get at the seal,
Squeak is your pads rubbing on the disc, check its not binding tooo much after putting new pads in,make sure the caliper slides freely try pushing the piston back and see if the caliper moves easy if ok make sure the pads are'nt sticking in the carrier you could also put some copper grease onm the back of the pads and contact points...

I have another leaking gearbox question.

Is the seal in the gearboxbellhousing where the clutchshaft comes out of the box easy to change or do I have to open the gearbox and take out the shafts?

Many thanks for your advice!

That's a real bitch to do, as it is fitted inside a 5 speed gearbox. You will have to take the whole box to bits to do that.

Just check that there is a pilot bearing in the flywheel, as if that is missing the shaft can move up and down and allow gearbox oil to leak. It is unusual for that seal to leak.

Part No. 806725090 for 5 speed cars.

Good luck, David

Thanks for the information David!
Do you have a picture showing the pilotbearing you mean?
Do you mean the bearing (clutch release bearing) that comes with the new clutch normally?

No, pilot bearing is the one that goes in the flywheel.
