Clutch change and now have gearbox noise? help!
I have an MY98 WRX and have just fitted an Exedy clutch from API.
Since fitting this I have a noise from the box which is only there on overrun, but in every gear.
It goes away when accelerating or pressing the clutch in.
What the hell is it caused by?
I really dont suspect the clutch to be honest.
Cheers,
Wayne.

What is this noise like?
If it goes away when pressing the clutch then some thoughts (may be wrong!)
Thrust bearing
No oil in gearbox
Needs time to bed-in
Have you called David!
Is the rest of the clutch system ok, ie peddle travel/free-play etc
The clutch is a qualiy item, David would not sell anything else.
Graham.

The thrust bearing is new and part of the kit. Do you think this could be the problem. When coasting out of gear without the clutch being presses it doesn't do it.
I am going to check the oil level today after it has been stood in the garage for a while. I used the original oil as it was only a month old. This was filtered before pouring back in. I have heard people say to overfill the gearbox but dont know why.
I have contacted David via PM to see if he has any ideas but I think its something other than the clutch.
I'm wondering if the mounting of the box is slightly different than before and that the noise is being amplified by this.
Cheers,
Wayne.

Sorry I cant help you with your problem - but I'm hoping you can help me? Did you do clutch yourslef? Mine has started slipping especially on boost. How do you change it? Did you use a full kit or just the friction plates? I was hoping to get away with just replacing the friction plates as they are only £80 from RN Golden.

Right then,
I think I have found the problem. It is the new bonnet duct that I have made to fit my STI8 IC that is now catching on the passenger side, hence only noisy when decelerating due to engine tilt. I accidently bent the NS bracket when removing the starter motor and must have bent it back too much.
Very silly I know, buy it sounds like transmission noise.
Thanks for the help/advice.
Just to add to the gearbox fitting question above, I found the instructions from both Graham and morpheous to be very helpful in removing and refitting.

The noise has been getting worse, even though I thought I have rectified the problem.
It turns out that one of the pins in the NS driveshaft had broken and there was only half left in the hole. They looked a little worse for wear when I took them out, but I didn't thin k they would break and drop out.
Anyway, got some new pins from the dealer today and have fitted them. So far, so good.
When I was fitting them I noticed a hell of a lot of play in the shaft at the gearbox end. Is this normal do we think?
