Default Redline Heavy Shockproof Gear / Diff Oil...

Picking up my 3rd scooby in a few days...

Before I do anything I'm going to renew all of the oils etc, the car has been very well serviced but I like to start my car ownership with a clean slate if you like, so.... for my V5 STi...

For the box & Diff I'm going to use Redline Heavy Shockproof

& the Engine oil... still out on that one.. gotta do more searching...

The Gear & Diff will use.. unless I am convinced otherwise.. still uncertain about the Engine Oil... Daily car / Spirited Weekends / Monthly Track Night.

Heavy ShockProof™

A unique lubricant containing a suspension of solid microscopic particles as an extreme pressure agent--unique solid dispersion which cushions gear teeth to help prevent tooth breakage and allows the use of lower viscosities. Recommended for heavily-loaded racing differentials and transmissions, Off Road racing and problem gearboxes. The viscosity characteristics allow the lubricant to resist throwoff and provide a film thickness similar to a 75W250 grade, while providing the same low fluid friction as an SAE 75W90.

A unique lubricant containing a suspension of solid microscopic particles as an extreme pressure agent--unique solid dispersion which cushions gear teeth to help prevent tooth breakage and allows the use of lower viscosities. The viscosity characteristics allow the lubricant to resist throwoff and provide a film thickness greater than an SAE 250 grade, with the same low fluid friction as with our 80W140. Recommended for heavily-loaded racing differentials and transmissions, Off Road racing and problem gearboxes. Offers a "best of both worlds" balance of relatively low drag and the utmost in protection.

2001- Subaru Impreza 2.0i WRX/STi Turbo 4WD

Engine SL/SJ/A1 5W-30, 5w-40 4.5litres
Manual gearbox GL-5 75W-90 4.1litres
Differential(s) GL-5 75W-90 1litre
Power Steering (where fitted) ATF-D2/D3
Brake Fluid DOT 3/4

These are recommendations for a stock road car.

By all means use Redline but I think you'll find it pricey alongside equivalent quality European oils such as Motul (used by the Subaru WR team) and Silkolene.

Hope this helps

Whatever you do don't put the Heavy shock proof in the gearbox, having tried it it totally screwed mine, could hardly move it from one gear to the next due to syncros not functioning, took four (yup four) changes using alternate oil to get rid of all traces, biggest and most expensive mistake to make.

Redline have been consulted on the suitability of this oil for use in the Impreza and have come back saying "don't", John Felstead asked the question following a debate about its use following some comments I (and others) made in a thread.

Simon genuine congrats on giving "qualified" advice to the forum btw. You going to be at TOTB?

Red Line HD Shock Proof is intended for dog engagement boxes and Redline in the US have stated themselves, that it is not their best product for synchro boxes. They have a better alternative specifically designed for synchro boxes.

Stick with Syntrax for the gear box fella, never had a problem with it.

Engine oils wise at work we use Silkolene Pro S and Pro R oils (10w and 15w-50 respectively)

Personally I've been sold on motul since I changed to it from Mobil 1 motorsport.
Knock count on idle is zero with the motul (3-4 on Mobil) and overall oil pressure is greatly increased throughout the life of the oil.

Interesting my new car.. (1st day ownership ) has been on Motul 300, Silkolene & Mobil 1. All 15-50 Fully Synth. At a loss what to go for now... Going to change every 4-5k anyway but might try the Motul first. As for my initial Q re the Redline - The car has used Castrol - so stick with that for the moment.

Elf has also very good gerabox oils but they aren't famous in our community!
Stay better with Syntrax !
