Default Living with tyre R gearing

How do you guys find it, I have heard that motorway driving is a bit annoying?

Basically my MY00 UK turbo has the original box in and is a bit knackered, I cannot afford a 6 speed in there and liked the idea of the mad acceleration of the type R gear ratios.

I believe that the 99/00 sets have a better 5th gear ratio, how much difference is it over the pre 99 ones?

Any comments welcomed

Cheers,

Neil.

Its not that bad, you get used to it.

Mind you, I only use it as a weekend car so if you do mega miles you might feel different. Might be an idea to go for a spin in one and see for yourself.

I struggle with mine sometimes, mega quick off the mark and to 100 mph but above that and on sweeping A roads where you want some top end I find it too low geared.

Just my opinion.

I did 460 miles to Brighton and back (not in same day) all done the steady 80's, I still managed to get about 28mph. but did find the high RPM a tad annoying, I keep trying to put it in 6th

Om MY97 Type R its pretty annoying sometimes especially on the motorways. In 5th at 80mph it revs pretty high around 6K. I only use mine as a weekend road demon not every day millage. As Pauleds2 says once your over 100mph its pretty taxed rev wise, but ill give top speed up in an un aerodyamic scoob for face mashing acceleration any day lol

I just put a type r box in my my00, with diffs etc swapped to suit the rear diff, it was in the car about 2hrs before i decided i couldn't live with it, yes the acceleration was a bit better, but the top end was killed.... wouldn't have done more than about 130 at the red line..... i now have my uk box back in and it's soooo much better it's unreal....

I have the 99 Type R about 4000 at 80 in top. Its still to low for me as I do lots of motorway work. Must get the thing changed.

Thanks for the replies guys, i think I need to be taken out in one to appriecate the gearing. Any offers?

"In 5th at 80mph it revs pretty high around 6K." - Blimey didnt realise it was that bad. It would seem that the 99/00's are a little better tho.

That car doesn't have standard gearing, 80mph in 5th is ~4000rpm as was said above. If you go for a Ltd model on a ver 5 or 6 (not sure which one), then they have a longer 5th gear ratio. Not so good on the track though with a big gap between 4th and 5th.

Not strictly true as my 5 Type R Ltd does not have the longer 5th gear - I believe it was an option.

I think you'll find that it's the STI saloons that have the longer fifth....

Do you mean the RA's (as I wasnt aware that the "normal" STi Saloons had shorter gearing ala the R/RA's anyway)?

I think it was an option on the R/RA's ?

the wrx`s have a kinda "inbetween" ratios between the type r and the uk models, maybe try a mates car with them?

i think my cars ratios are quite a nice balance to be honest

How do the type r gearboxes hold up to power? I heard they were crapping out at about 380lb/ft

I´d prefer the ratio´s and weight of the 5speed rather than going for a 6speed.

96 ra box = 19.7 mph per 1000 rpm (top) on standard wheels,
