Sounds like the nut on fifth has come slightly lose, it's not uncommon on later classics..... mine used to do it, but i found that i could drive round it..... ie, change slower!

could be the pinion shaft nut as RON said, or possibly a worn synchro ring if you are getting a crunch. Do you get any problems with it dropping out of fifth? if so most likely the shaft nut

My mates MY00 does the same intermitantly. Also, on my MY99, after changing the gearbox oil, I sometimes get a crunch going into first It happens loads, then stop for ages, then loads again!!!!! Fooking mad these later classics. Never had an issue with my MY95.

Just my penneth worth

First of all, find out what oil they used. If it's fully synthetic, drain it and replace with semi-synthetic 75/90 (eg Castrol driveline) Exactly the same thing happened when I put Silkolene Syn5 in the box of my 99my I changed to driveline (then called Syntrax) and it cured the problem.
There has been a lot of discussion on here about gearbox oil in Scoobs. IMHO it's best to stick to semi-syn. You've found out the expensive way that your syncromesh does not like full-syn.

Sounds like a synchro issue but I have to agree totally with JohnD. These boxes are quite sensitive to what oil they perform best with.
Too slippy, like Redline HD Shockproof and you can run into synchro problems.

Exactly what happened to me, changed to Redline - started crunching.
Changed back to Syntrax not had a problem since.
