Unhappy Gearbox Oil - Dipstick

Hi

I have just located another dipstick under the intercooler - I am assuming its the gearbox oil??

It hasn't got a yellow top so assume its not meant to be checked often? It's hidden quite well too!!

Anyway, the oil smells like Automatic Trans. Fluid ... but is clear.

The oil seems to just about touch the stick, engine/gearbox are cold, level ground ................................

Do I need to top up? What with? Will differring types mix? What is the amount the box takes? (MY00 Classic) .... wheres the drain hole? and where do you fill it up, the dipstick hole?

Slightly worried!

Pete

Just found out that the drain plug is actually towards the rear of the car, that it takes about 4 litres of gearbox oil and that dipstick SHOULD have some oil on it!!

But, can I mix oils??

Yes i used 75w90 semi synthetic gearbox oil and had no problems.
Dipstick should markings on it? to give you the correct level.
Any yes you fill it through the dipstick hole.
The drain plug is at the lowest point of the box easily seen from below.
cheers

Guess what Pete? There's no need to disconnect the **** crank sensor. Be sure to overfill it though. I'll see if I can find a 5 year old to show you how

My 99 manual issued May 99.
Page 10-24 Manual transmission oil -checking level and oil grade, viscosity info.
Page 11-5- capacities.
It doesn't tell you the location of drain plug but come on, an engineer of your analytical ability can surely find a little old drain plug.
Gotta take undertrays off first. Jack up rear while draining to empty. If old oil is blackish, panic! Drainplug has a magnet on it. Gearteeth attached is quite normal.
Some here suggest slight overfilling.

HTH.

Right, I'll overfil it ...... I've taken copies of this thread just in case of any compensation claim.

Cheers - the dealer put Shell SL Gear Oil in May2004 ........ can't find out anything about it??

OK, found it in the Manual now - 10-22, humble apologies ..... however, it also states that it should have a yellow top???

Has anyone got a yellow top on their Transmission Oil Dipstick?? No wonder I had never noticed it before ... without that yellow top its pretty much invisible under the intercooler!

HTH.
Reminds me of my Father in Law who removed what he thought was the drain plug on his Daihatsu 4 track once. The tinkling noise of bits dropping to the bottom of the gearbox somehow told him that it wasn't. Only cost him £800 to get it put right

Did you get a handbook with the car? If so, did you read any of it? On second thought maybe you should'nt If you read the bit about how to change the oil filter I can see you being tempted to start another "Changing the oil" thread! So leave it where it is, propping up the short leg on the kitchen table?

My handbook says it has a yellow top ............ it hasn't.

So it got missed by me, until now I have had well paid slaves to work on my car - so, you wouldn't expect me to see it would you??

You know what Subaru says about oil changes ..... and it ain't ****!!!
