Default Sti v4 TM Intercooler Help

Have been offered a perfect condition sti4 intercooler for my97 uk car...
My questions being :
Is it worth the upgrade or wont it make a difference ?
I will be upgrading turbo etc: and are looking to be around 300/300 tops..
Also i have been told not to bother with the alloy y piece and to fit the 2 adaptors from my 97 i\c and the larger samco hose ?

All comments appreciated

Try and get an STi8 Intercooler, that would be worth it.

The intercooler should be capable of 300bhp, though with 300lbs of torque you may need to look at other parts that may need upgrading (clutch is a possability depending on how hard you drive the car).

Thanks for the reply Tony so i am right in thinking its better than oem 98uk ....
Also what do you reckon about not using the alloy y piece and using a samco hose with the adapters from my 98 oem cooler instead ?
Its bigger in diameter and smoother and fits better with the i\c tilted

Yes the STi intercoolers are better than a standard wrx/turbo intercooler.
Not sure about the alloy bit, but samco are very good and you shouldnt have any problems with 300bhp, most sti's of a classic nature (v4) pushout between 270-290bhp anyway

Cheers Tony
Never thought of it that way
The samcos wider and obviously smoother than the alloy y piece and it fits better,And most of all its blue

If your i/c is not slanty, (not sure what year they changed) then i think it will be the same as the STi4 i/c but painted black, only difference will be the y pipe plastic on UK/wrx cast alloy on STi.

My 98 uk i\cooler is not the slanty one...
I have measured them side by side and to me the back tank is longer on sti v4 not sure on internals ?
The alloy y piece is not as good as the samco in looking at it !!samco larger smoother and fits better....
But i dont want to waste money on the sti 4 i\c if its not goiing to give any gains over uk98 oem i\c ??
As i stated before i am looking to be around 300\300 with the vf28 and apexi etc:
Confused again now lol

Hit the nose on the head, i am sure it's off a car that's been rear ended. Off out soon with a bib bar and a clamp to try and straighten it!

I upgraded my slanty IC to a 2002 IC and that wasn't too difficult. It would be much easier for you as you have the facelift so there is more space between the throttle body and the bulkhead. the slanty was so crap though, at least your standard one isn't too bad.

I think the STi one would be better, from what I've read, but probably not a lot better.

v3/v4 intercoolers are supposed to be the same as the sti versions without the polished alloy finish

my 97 wrx intercooler has larger end caps then my mates 97 uk car

I thought it would have to be that done one before with same prob, dont forget the feedback for the guy
As for the i\c if its going to cope with 300ish bhp then i will use the sti for now but i dont think theres much difference but sti4's make 300bhp with it..
Still if its going to cost silly money i may give it a miss and go bugeye i\c ?

Mickey yes the back tank is longer thats all i think and the y piece is not as good as the samco hose..
Lets see how many beer tokens he wants for it ??
