Default VF28 upgrade questions

Hi.

Just recently bought a VF28 for my MY99 Turbo. I'll be replacing the TD04 with the VF in a near future, but would like to know what to aim for when i get it installed and remap the car.

I already have full-decat and STi panel filter, HKS SSQV (with recirc fitting). Oil press, oil temp, boost, AFR and KL already installed.

I'll be adding a Walbro, fuel regulator, FMIC and K&N 57i induction kit along with the VF28. All this along with the necessary remap.

What sort of mid-range and held boost can it safely handle with the above mods? I read about 1.3-1.4 mid dropping to 1.2 at 7000 rpm. Is this correct? I'm looking for around 300 hp, reliable.

Was also wondering about getting some new headers, like the Megan or GT Spec. Would it be worth it? Any benefits with regards to response time, etc?

If there's any other modification you'd recommend besides the ones I refered, please comment.

Thanks,
Paulo

the VF28 should be ok for that power but i think its the top level for it, i looked at getting one of those for my MY99 but i got advised to get a VF34 instead

From what I've read and have been advised:

Be very careful choosing headers. There's been a lot of discussion on NASIOC and one group test which makes for interesting reading. HERE

I made 320bhp in my stock sti5 with a vf28. It's getting near the limits tho.

320bhp is really the absolute limit of the small standard VF28 (STD at least on the sti5/6)

To get a lot more you would have to go to Well Lane Turbo.....................

I know that Harvey has achieved 377bhp with this Turbo

Interesting that a Hybrid VF22 (much bigger) wont achieve much more than this....................
and actually much less at places like PowerStation

I achieved 299BHP at Well Lane though on an unmodified car

At least though Well Lane is consistent - every mod that made the car feel faster on the road equated to increased power at Well Lane and not anywhere else - I guess it all depends on whose Rollers are the most accurate - but if it feels much faster on the road then I guess who cares

But really the VF28 is a small Turbo for cars with very basic mods........... I have changed my Turbo several times from the Original Turbo - now the limiting factor for me seems to be the Cylinder heads (which dont like you pushing more than about 500bhp power continually through them)

The VF 28 is quite capable of producing over 350 bhp with the necessary supporting mods. I had 370 odd bhp with all supporting mods prior to fitting an Ion turbo which did 417 bhp straight out the box.
Steve : You talk a load of bollocks about Well Lane. I had a similar result with the VF28 at Star about the same time.
BTW, recent runs with the WRX running 380-400 bhp, dependant on map and fuel have been very similar on the state of the art equipment at Dastek, with Dastek reading marginally more on a couple of occassions.

Like I said though it depends on the rollers

Maybe on a Dyno it would achieve 380bhp but at PowerStation, PowerEngineering and G Force you would not get anyway near those numbers and as most people live in the Southern part of the country (South of Birmingham that is!) they are more likely to use these rollers and wont ever achieve those power numbers, maybe on race fuel but I'd even doubt that on a VF28.......... so I would rather quote a more realistic 'Southern' figure.................
