Default Headers: Megan or Gruppe-S?

Hi

Between the Megan Racing and the Gruppe-S v2 headers which ones would you recommend? The Megan ones are cheaper, and also come with uppipe.
Are the the Gruppe-S ones worth the extra cost performance-wise? Also, If I were to get the Gruppe-S which uppipe would you recommend? The Helix one, or should i just keep the OE one?

Let me know of your experiences, and which ones you think are the best choice.

Cheers,
Paulo

Thanks for your replies. Gruppe-S it will be.

Just out of curiosity, why do you say that the Megan headers might cause problems?

Cheers,
Paulo

I installed Gruppe s with the flex joint helix up-pipe all wrapped in the usual way.
The fit to the cylinder heads (centers between the heads) was 3 mm out, but was not a big deal to 'spring' into place.
All is well, no blowing (used Impreza gaskets, not Gruppe s ones) and the alignment of the (TD05 20g) turbo was as sweet as a nut.

I bought mine through the excellent Group Buy by Chrome for £350 plus flowers for his wife!

Very pleased, and the sound is classic Impreza to 4500, and BALLISTIC to 8000

Graham.

In the last issue of Sccoby Magazine they did another part of an ongoing project car and used a Megan set of headers but blew the flexi joint. Might be worth reading to make your own opinion. Have fitted a set of headers to my Sti with up-pipe only snag the CEL used to keep coming on, gave an extra 25 bhp with standard exhaust. Shown on power run prior to further mods. Fixed when further mods done and Gems ecu fitted. Have fun making your decision.

Those headers weren't Megan but a similar 'eBay' brand. Andy is using the Megan ones now IIRC.

I have them on mine atm and they're still in one piece. Gaskets supplied are trouble but the Subaru ones generally clean up ok. Fit is excellent. Just the longevity of the flexi-joint which is a concern at present (not a concern with Gruppe-S).

A set of Megans has been reported to have blown the flexi joint in less than 1000 miles of abuse on 22B.com . Also Andy got rid of the Megans on his MY03 WRX due to the OEM headers (ported) giving better spool up but only losing 5 bhp at the top end.... on a hybrid TD04. So results may differ for a big turbo (i.e TD05/06 etc).

So, i have a set of Gruppe s headers and helix up-pipe put aside for me, and they are ceramic coated....... well, all bar the up-pipe, so does this mean that i don't need to wrap them?? i'm hoping not, cos it's a right pain in the derrier!!

Exclamation

im using a set from powerstation always had good results with smaller turbos - still a solid up pipe, but done over 15k and still going strong ( touch wood)

edited to say never really had any increase in hp over others but 20 ft lb extra can't be moaned at

320/320 ish on clinics rollers with a vf35 on a bugeye wrx

Ron.
Good choice Ron that's what I have on my Scooby, been on for a year and they're excellent. Don't wrap the headers as they might get to hot and crack as they are already ceramic coated. I wrapped the up pipe, but don't make the same mistake as me, wrap upto the flexi and then wrap the flexi seperately because the flexing of the flexi snapped my exhaust wrap

Try looking at www.gruppe-s.com

Don't worry about them being in the States, loads of us have bought stuff from them and they are a good supplier. You might get cought for import duty, I think I paid about £30 - 40 duty on my headers and up-pipe.
