Separating Engine/ Gearbox
Has anyone any trick for separating the engine from the gearbox on a Legacy, I suspect it's similar to the early Impreza set ups.
We've removed 3 bolts around the edge, the one thru the starter motor. The starter motor has been removed to be on the safe side as well.
Now we can get about 0.5 mm of a gap, but no more.
The clutch fork has been released now as well.
Any idea's.

All the mounts are off the engine, using a hoist we can lift it about 4".

Lift the engine about 2 inches - so that the engine mount studs are clear of the engine subframe...Then, as above - screwdriver/prybar until engine and box part company.

lift it by roping /strapping it around the inlet manifold, either side off the throttle body, hangs much more level and is far ******* easier at sliding it on /off the studs.
As above though, first use a big old screwdriver and wack it in the join between gearbox and engine wherever you can get at it, then get the prybar in about half way down each side, that's where the dowels are, and start levering.
File a little material off the dowels (on one half) and apply coppaslip / anti sieze compound, much easier next time it has to come out.

*****DON'T PRISE ANYTHING APART****************
THE LEGACY TURBO IS NOT THE SAME AS THE IMPREZA
YOU MUST REMOVE THE INSPECTION COVER FROM THE BOTTOM FWD EDGE OF THE BELLHOUSING ,AND REMOVE THE CLUTCH COVER RETAINING BOLTS FROM THE FLYWHEEL ONE AT A TIME ,AS YOU WOULD DOING AN AUTOMATIC!! BELEIVE IT OR NOT ,WHEN YOU HAVE DONE THIS THE ENGINE WILL PART FROM THE GEARBOX.
YOU CAN THEN REMOVE THE CLUTCH ASSEMBLY FROM THE GEARBOX...
IF YOU DO PRISE THE GEARBOX AS PREVIOUSLY SUGGESTED HERE,YOU WILL DAMAGE THE FLYWHEEL OR GEARBOX..
WHEN YOU ARE REFITTING FIT ALL THE CLUTCH ASSEMBLY TO THE GEARBOX ,THEN REFIT ENGINE AND REFIT BOLTS THROUGH COVER HOLE...
I KNOW THIS COS I'VE GOT A LEGACY TURBO ('92) AND HAVE PERSONALLY DONE THE JOB..
ANY HELP REQUIRED EMAIL ME AT wraith@cruises4causes.co.uk

ooh expensive..
What's holding the gearbox to the engine then, why will it damage the flywheel??
My assumption here is that the clutch release arm attaches to the clutch cover (with the release bearing) but cannot be "dissengaged" ala impreza ???
does the release arm pivot pin not pull out in the same way then ??
not done a legacy.

Take out the hex bolt on the starter side of the gear box, screw in a lond 10m bolt and pull out the pivot pin for the clutch fork, the clutch/pressure plate/bearing will come off with the engine.Check the picture above.
If you get a few mm of space between the bell housing and the block, spray some lub/oil in the gap (aim for the dowels)and retighten a few bolts to bring the eng and box back together.
It always works, its similar to poking your (coughs)dipstick in a dry hole,it needs to go in and out and then shake it all about. It will deffinately *** (out).

didn't no bout that ,i had a nightmare of a time...everyone i spoke to said to do it like a normal clutch ,just undo the bellhousing bolts and pull them apart ,after ages of doing that and getting only less than an inch of movementno ,i looked around and found that if you undo the afforementioned clutch bolts it all comes apart clutch in bellhousing ,gotta do my clutch again very soon so i'll try it your way ,gotta be a lot quicker..took me bl**dy hours..lol
