Default timing belt

hi all
just had a m8 change timing belt, when he took the timing belt covers off he noticed that the timing was out by 1 tooth, but the car still run ok,he said it would be best to put it back where it should be which he did,now the car seems slower (it could be just in my head) but the engine seems to tick over better do i leave it as is or move it back to the old settings any suggestions
thanks
