I would agree that its a bitch to do,but alot easier than the standard one,as this samco pipe can flex and bend, and the metal inserts can be taken out.
The factory pipe needs to be carefully butchered to get out,the two plastic pipes(oil breather and pressure return from blow off) pipes can be broken/cut/chisseled off if you dont need to save the old pipe.
All this asuming that is a picture of a phase 2 intake pipe.
Get some hash cakes if the bear dont help..

I was toying with the idea of removing the manifold but only as a last resort

Do it.
That's what i did in the end. Bit messy with all the pipes etc, but you will know it is all piped up tight. Ended up doing other changes while i was there, but keep it simple!

I would still rather cut the small plastic ends off and do it in less than an hour, unless you realy want to polish the underside of the inlet manifold.
There is always the possibility of something breaking, pipes splitting/kinking,or gaskets and seals not sealing correctly.Besides the pipe still wont come out untill the fuel rail/injectors is disconnected from the manifold and taken apart.
IMO ofcourse
