Talking Mdification advice

Hey
I bet you all love us impreza owners without a clue!!! I got a 97 STI Type R. I bought as imported with dump valve and big exhaust. Thats about all I know,( i think it has sequential blow off valve, so i am told, dont know what the hell THAT IS!!!) other than it goes like stink!! Apparently 0-60 4.3 secs, 280bhp standard. What mods would anyone suggest under 500 quid? if any....! I dont want to mod the body or lights, happy with them, engine mods is wat I want, can I get any more for that money? Downpipe has been mentioned, so has air filter or induction kit, and flywheel. Any opinions would be very welcome as I dont know Sh*t about engines!!
Cheers guys

A remap is the first thing, to get it safe on Uk fuel. On that year STi it'll need a new chip in the computer as a minimum and then remapped - cost about £750 here. There are other options for a remap or replacement ECu but that way works and is probably the cheapest.

But to make the best of it I'd advise a new panel filter and a decat downpipe as a necessary evil.

Can't be done for £500 but if you do it any other way you'll likely break the engine with a cost of about 2500 - 3000 coming your way.

Stitch in time mate.

First thing I'd suggest is to protect the engine. Some Type Rs of that era are known to let go around 40K mark and the only cure is a complete engine rebuild. Thus I'd recommend looking up a competent ECU mapper and get the engine remapped to UK fuel (remember the JDMs are mapped for 100RON). It'll cost around £500-800, but heavily worth it. They'll probably recommend a Knocklink sensor too.

Once thats done you can look at building a faster car.

There's a few threads on Type R maintenance and care, particularly advice from the respected DavidAPi on major causes of JDM engine failures and how to largely avoid them. ( haha! Just like the one above! )

Cheers and enjoy the car
