Default 5th Gear on 96 jap import

New Boy here.

1996 Jap import STI RA Vltd. Can you change the 5th gear, if so what would it do to the RPM. It's so high on the motorway, even at 70 mph.

you would need to get the fifth gear from a uk car of the same year, this would give you 4 close ratios and fifth would be a longer gear suited to cruising. At the moment my sti v3 sits at 4000rpm in 5th at 80mph, where as the eqivalent uk model is at 3000rpm at 80mph. hope this helps.

Speak to API Engines. They provided me with a longer 5th for mine. 4K in 5th is now about 87mph, which may not sound like much but it means there is not that much more of a gap from 4th. You can get a longer one (same as UK I think) but the gap from 4th would make it die off a lot more when your accelerating.

Dave.
