Engine rebuild costs/options
Before i go around getting quotes from tuners would like to get a rough idea of what i will actually be asking for.
My STi 4 has done 60k, possibly has a head gasket problem at the moment, is due for cambelt and previous owner did not always run it on optimax/booster even though he had his boost controller whacked up to 21 psi
I am currently sourcing parts in order to make 380 Bhp (Headers, decat, hyperflow IC, TD05/06 20G, apexi ECU, 550cc injectors) but i am thinking that an engine rebuild first would be a sensible idea. Seeing as i am going for a rebuild think that i might want to build a bullet proof 400bhp car.
If i asked someone to rebuild the factory to OE spec with the exception of a few uprated parts what parts do you think i should uprate? Dont want to go overboard here, just want a reliable 400bhp engine.

I'm no expert but I would have thought for reliability you would be looking to change the pistons and rods if you are going to run above 1.4 bar or are wanting >360 bhp. Having said that a number of "standard" internal STi's are runinng around the 400bhp mark at the moment.
I'd speak to a couple of the regular tuners (David @ API, Conrad @ TRL & Mark @ Lateral to name but a few), and just ask for some advice recommendations.

Probably a lot cheaper and quicker to sling in a new age short motor and use everything you have from the Sti 4, by the time you faffed about buying bits to rebuild your current one the price over takes that of the new short motor.

l know it happens / can be done, but I also see failed ones with detted piston crowns and another rebuild needed way too soon.

Just worried about rebuild costs, seen people selling imprezas that have had rebuilds and saying the rebuild was 4k!!
Anyway thanks for all your replies on this one guy, i should stop stressing so much lol.

Cheapest option in my opinion would have been the ready built and run in short motor but if there are issues with squish volumes then fair enough, you just have to add in the additional cost of mapping it on top of the replacement if you go that route.

API did a 2.5 conversion on my STi3 in October. It's done over 10K miles now and runs sweet as a nut. Has most of the bits you've listed too.
API for the engine swap and Andy Forrest for the mapping and excellent advice from both.
