can anyone tell me if replacing the crank bearings a major job
could the cause be a weak oil pump

That's a major job, as a Subaru engine being of flat configuration, means that the first thing in and the last thing out is the crank.
SO, whilst there is no need to strip the cylinder heads down, EVERY other part of the engine will be in pieces.
Not a job for a learner or anyone of faint heart, no matter how enthusiastic.
Leave it to the professionals or face weeks of aggro is my advice.

glad i got the warranty for the car,as it sounds exspensive,would you recommend they change the clutch while engine is out as you no what your talking about, original from new i think,done 39000 miles
