What would be CHEAPEST option for 2.5 conversion car is my98 standard with piston slap and its doing my head in dont wont silly bhp 330+ but with options to upgrade bit by bit.
So many people have rebuilt my97 98 cars with same problems piston slap bigends no 3 only for it to happen again dont want that to happen to me Any ideas? have looked at the big 400+/400+ 2.5 rebuilds big money ....but CHEAPEST RELIABLE IS WHAT IM AFTER think there will be lots of interest about this one.

Depends what you mean by cheap????

A new US 2.5 short block is about £1200 'ish
You can use all the existing parts from your engine
Though I would fit new water and oil pumps at the very least. (£300)

You will need all the gaskets (£250'ish)

Doing all the work yourself that's £1750

I doubt you can do it cheaper than that!!

My extra costs were taken up with bigger turbo and injectors and all the uprated bits

does the short motor come ready to run? (eg. crank shells sump etc?) Are they new or used? Do you have to get 550's?

The EJ257 (US STI) short block comes built with crank, rods and pistons. So yes the the shells are in there

All you need to add are heads, sump/oil pick up, water and oil pumps.

Yes the map will need tweeked. I wouldn't say there would be much bhp gain using your stock items but torque will be gained.

Yep Torque will be the only major increase and that's waht you want for the road!!!

For a MY98 you will need an Apexi Power FC, Link or someother mapable ECU. The std ECU is not mapable

The block is a brand new!!! EJ257 from the US. It's what they fit to the US STI's

You will spend more than £1700 doing this but how much depends on you strength of will There are lots of things you should/could do while it's in pieces.
New head bolts should be fitted, forged pistons and rods could be fitted to save opening it up at a later date. Then theres all the other bits like fuel regs/pump, hoses and injectors

It all depends on where you want to stop!!!

A 2.5 with a TD05, 440 inj's and a re-map should be good for 320+BHP and bags of torque running low'ish boost

If you are content with a 20-30 bhp hike with a considerable increase in torque and throttle response then here would be my approach.
2.5 short eng £1500 ish
Gasket set £250
Fuel pump and reg £200
Oil and Filter £50

Reuse the OE oil and water pumps (assuming you have not had a blow up)
Run the OE turbo at wastegate pressure (direct hose connection)
Set the AFR slightly richer on boost by adjusting the fuel pressure.
Have someone listen for det with a set of cans, this is unlikely at low boost/high air flow. The std ignition map is a remarkably good match at low boost due to the higher load site accessed.

When I was running-in my 2.33 I used the TD04 at wastegate pressure and it was a lovely car to drive, started running out of puff around 6000 rpm but the midrange pull was so strong that you just shifted up around 5500 anyway.
This works fine on the long geared UK's.

Then you can drive around whilst you save up to go through the following list

Mappable ECU (Apexi of course) £750
440 Injectors £150 ?
Turbo TD05-16G £550

This will see you the right side of 300bhp with a really strong midrange.

On a phase 2 then I would change the tensioner but on a phase 1 I wouldn't.
I'd also only change the belt if it was due for (or close to) renewal on its service interval.

Would that be feasible on an MY99-00? I mean, in terms of OE material, like ECU, heads, turbo.

Or would you change anything to that plan on a phase 2 engine (apart from the 440's that it already has).

Have to admit this does look tempting

Cam tensioner needs renewed if it is disturbed on your year of car, other than that, just bolt it up, check it for AFR/det and away you go.
Add a TD05 and Tek 3 in the future if you want another 100bhp from it

Sounds good andy did think my engine was going to blow (bigends) had into dealers they say piston slap wasnt convinced did oil pressure check today

105+ psi cold idle
35 hot idle
80-90 on boost when hot
7 minutes for water to get upto temp and 17 minutes for oil just on idle not driving to get upto temp.(motul 10w40)
With these results i think i can exceptthat it is piston slap not bigends going, so 2.5 conversion will be on hold with the plan of 350-400 bhp in the future. turbo injectors and the rest apexi ecu etc etc lol

WHEN I DO IT I will be in touch Andy for ecu and mapping if thats ok? thanks to all for help and hope this thread has been of interest and dont stop guys keep it coming.

I am so tempted by the 2.5 route but am worried about the std UK 5 speeder. Later in the year, I am expecting a little cash which is either getting spent on a 6 speed box with a little left to go towards the 2.5 or is getting used along with my car in exchange for an Audi S4 2.7 biturbo. I just can't make up my mind
