Question Gearbox troubles!!!

Hi all

Just had my car remapped with all my new stuff on it but the gearbox has gone again! The problem is it must be running about 340bhp @ 1.4 bar and has destroyed 3rd gear. I need a stronger box than the sti2 (MY96) has but the problem is it has 4.1 diffs and all the later sti's have 4.4 diffs...my question is...WHAT IS THE SOLUTION???! (without spending a couple of g's on a 6speed)

Many thanks
Stuart

Yes already considering that but the 4.4 diff makes acceleration slower....like the short ratios

the 4.44 diff is lower geared for more acceleration.................the higher the number the lower the gearing...............

as steve says, easiest is to build a later type box with your diff ratios to suit....

Steve, what diffs did you fit to your RA box ? I'm running an RA box in my 94 WRX and the gearing is too low now with the 20g and Andy F remap I was thinking of fitting 3.9s and possibly a longer 5th from a type R as the box needs splitting due to a bent 3rd gear selector fork. Can you also tell me MPH in each gear at 7000 rpm.

Cheers Colin.

I have a gearbox that had just over 60k mls before a complete rebuild (WRX over 400 bhp) TY752 VB3FA. This is fitted with a 4.11 diff. PM or e-mail me if it is of interest to you.

Stuart, You will accelerate faster on a 4.4 but have a lower top speed. But with the long fifth gear we've fitted you should still be capable of ***[ more than enough ] mph. Anyway we have disciussed this and you're now all fixed up. Subject to the weather the box and diff etc will be in Edinburgh Thursday.

Aye will be with the "weight" penalty of eating the mentioned delicacy....LOL

Don't you think andy should personally pick up and deliver my gearbox and diff to me?

I have the same problem with mine 3rd gear went two week after it was mapped to 1.3 bar! Mines a uk box tho, but am after a stronger replacment box, I really didnt wana go down the six speed route mainly because of cost but its looking like the best option for the long run.

Any other ideas on what to change it for instead of the six speed???

Just thought i would update the thread. My sti6 gearbox, 4.4 rear diff and new exedy organic clutch are in and it is really great. It is a bit tight at the moment and i am running the box/diff in gently before using boost.

My thanks have to go out to David @ API for supplying the parts and with such helpful service too

Also have to thank Andy F for the great mapping (smooth as anything btw andy) and also for the help with information (although he did break the damn thing! LOL). He has been great no matter.

Here's to many years of no trouble!

Stuart

PS David, love the longer 5th....makes the cruising so nice now

It is difficult to explain to people how much of an improvement it is when the longer fifth is fitted.

Enjoy.

Good luck, David APi Engines / APi Impreza

Don't worry I'll be there. Looks like I won't have anything like the top figure this time now you and Jamie have raised the bar a fair bit.

As for being a wuss, try type r gearing with the noise from a decatted blitz nur spec.
