MAF Sensor
It's the little thing on the right hand side of the airbox plugged into the inlet tract by 2 locking torx screws. If you can't find it by yourself though I'm a little unsure on how you intend to test it.

Thought it was that. I thought you could unplug it to see if the car struggled, from what I read I thought if it did not affect the engine it was kaput?? Can this be done on the MY01 I presume it's the same principal?? Can anyone confirm

did you get anywhere with this?,i've just purchesed a my01 and even though the clutch is slipping sometimes a bit and could be the problem,is that when excellerating, the turbo seems to kick in between 3-4000 rpm quite aggressive and pulls all the way up to redline which i like, but sometimes it doesn't,it seems a bit flat and then at say 5000 rpm it picks up a bit but nowhere near as aggressive as when it kicks in early,it runs fine on tickover and doesn't run lumpy so was wondering if this was a likely dodgy maf??
If you unplug it, it will be recognised as a fault straight away. And the the car will drive like s****, not recomended. I previously had 3 MAF's go with no such warning.... Then again mine's an MY99 which is renound for it's MAF eating capability.
I think, without measuring MAF voltages the only real way to tell is to replace it completely and reset the ECU.
Personally if I still had one I'd change it every oil change, or at least every year.
