Default EJ25 with Reliable 400bhp - Turbo Ideas?

I have a EJ257 block with uprated internals in and currently running a TD05 16G turbo with supporting mods (Own FMIC, 550cc, Front Entry Manifold conversion etc. etc.) and guessing it is around 330bhp at the moment with plenty of low down torque and minimal lag.

Wish to keep the minimal lag and was thinking of upgrading to the 20G. Looking at John Banks thread using the 20G it was a good choice for a reliable 400bhp and minimal lag?

Or is a better choice the iON P450 turbo?

Do not wish to start rotating the turbo or anything like that.

Or any other suggestions?

Wondering on the turbo due to the other thread asking is it a 'true' 400bhp turbo. Or was that only on a 2.0?

Cheers,
Jon.

A TD06H 20G should work well. In my opinion the TD05 hotside is too restrictive for the 2.5, which causes the engine to feel liveless at high revs. In a 2.5 car I mapped with TD05 20G it (hardly) didn't make any difference in power between 1.2 bar and 1.4 bar @ 6000 RPM. (airflow increase was only marginal) The 20G compressor is perfectly suited to flow enough air for a 400 HP aplication.

wont the ion turbo be better in the long run if you want to up the power as its pointless saying you won't want more power, as thats why your putting the 2.5ltr in

Possibly.

But if it is more laggy than the 20G and uses more of its power higher up I would prefer less lag.

2.5 Litre isnt going in the STI8. Putting the 2.5 in as want more low down grunt if you see what I mean.

Even at medium boost the 20G will peak and then hold flat from 5000 RPM up. Nothing wrong with that if you want a lag free car. I am using this turbo again on the Legacy EJ257 project. It should just clip 400 BHP on Optimax with the 2.5 or near enough, but on the road it feels a wickedly faster car than 400 BHP out of a 2.0 IMHO. Although in testing side by side, the 2.0 held up well apart from early midrange in gear testing, but had an 8000 RPM limit.

Thanks John.

In your personal opinion would you use the 20G or go for the P450 on the 2.5?

Thanks.

"for a reliable 400bhp and minimal lag": 20G definitely, although you are at the limit of the turbo on Optimax here. I think you get a little free power with the same turbo on the 2.5 vs 2.0 because you are running lower boost. Intercooler should have a slightly easier time of it than the same power on 2.0 as well.

That looks familiair . That's gonna be my setup, a TD06H on a 2.5 L. Mark is going to map it in January, looking forward to it.

If you would like to try something with a little more zest, I have something no it's way, but it's a 450hp turbo really. TD06h 20g turbos will be in first thing in 2005.

Paul

ps I know it's cheeky...

Tell me more Paul

What's it going to be like lag wise? Simular to the 20G or bit laggier?

Price too please!

Give me a bell if you want to 07968447961.

Looking for it mid Feb time TBH anyway.

Jon.

Too right it's cheeky

An 06 turbine will be quite a bit laggier than an 05, probably still acceptable on a 2.5 but a bit dead on a 2.0

I am not sure a 06 turbine will be that laggy at all with a 20g with 2.5 engine. With larger compressor wheel I could make 2 bar at 2800 with 2.5 engine in 5th gear. But it will be worse on the smaller 20g as it will need a little more speed to make the flow, but it will not surge on the 2.5.

I have a old p20 housing

If i fit the p20 housing on the t06/05 turbo
maybe i can gain some power on top.

Not really very feasable. I think it can be done, but as I have got very good power out of the 7cm mitsi housing I would just go for the td06h turbine, I think it effects spoolup and lag less than a P20 housing would. Although it's a large diameter turbine it's actually very light (thin blades) and has more blades than most so spoolup and lag is better than the size suggests.
