Question crunching/'falling' into first gear

the car has done this since i bought it (4 years ago) and for some reason i've never thought to ask why it does this

basically, every now and again when i put into 1st gear it just 'falls' into gear with a nice crunch. there's no resistance against the stick, it just slides in.

at first i thought i might not have the clutch right down as it makes a crunch like when you miss a gear and bring the clutch up before the gear is engaged, but this doesn't seem the reason

have read threads about 5th popping out and cases of a reluctance to get into gear, but this is the complete opposite

any ideas?

Default !!

my 2003 wrx does the same. Drove all the way back to essex from heathrow so engine nice and warm, rolled up to a T junction with a slight incline and the first gear kind of rattled its way in!
Not a cruch as such but i have already had the 3rd and 4th gear syncros replaced under warraty. not the bomb proof jap reliabilty i was hoping for!
