Doesn't sound like coil packs..

MAF is fairly robust on early cars but does sound like the most likely to be at fault from your description.. you could try cleaning it..

also might be worth resetting the ecu and you are using 97ron or Optimax??

Ecu reset info here

hi.....1st thing i would suggest is 2 check for air leaks ...the easiest test to do , you need some carburetter spray or similar ........spray around your throttle body , intercooler inputs/outputs & around your induction & vacuum pipes ......do this whilst the engine is ticking over ........if your idle speed rises whilst spraying around a certain area then thats where its leaking ....then if need be you can go to the nxt step.

do you no any MOT testers that will let you stick you car on there gas anylizer ?? ......if you do then that would be helpfull ......a CO , O2 , and lambda reading would help alot .
