Question Airbox boo-boo! Need guidance please.

Fellow SN-ers, lend me your ears!

I (un)wisely went out to try a spot of airbox work on my car MY94 STI - I have the black box ugly resonator-y thing with an HKS induction kit hooked on with a 90deg bend. And me lovely MAF.

So me thinks, I'll pull the ugly resonator off and see what the diameters of the hoses are? Whilst doing so I didnt realise there was a small pipe connected underneath, and cause I ate a mars bar (extra strength ) I broke the bugger.

Ideally I want rid of the ugly resonator, and its seems I only have the mushroom head of my HKS with any of the other bits for it.

So (finally groans everyone) heres my questions:

1 - the two smaller tubes that go into the ugly resonator. Can these be blocked off? (smaller tube underneath that i broke, and the slightly bigger one one right side of resonator)?/

2 - if I cant bloke them off, what do I do?

3 - if all else fails, anyone got a resonator

Help mucho appreciated,
marky-san

hi mate have done the same on my 94 ra...to be honest i would not worry to much about the small pipoe on the bottom of resenator box, dont block it though, the larger pipe is an oil breather..all i did was cut a lenth of pipe down, sleaved it into the rubber hosing and jubile clipped back together, drilled a hole on the side of the pipe and fitted an l shaped piece of pipe which i then pushed the oil breather back on to...basically i wanted to see if this worked without the resonator...now i know it does i am going to get it made in ali pipe...p.s if you have an a/market dump valve it becomes very very noisy with this r/box removed..))

I have recently replaced my resonator box with an MRT Intlet Plenum Replacement pipe (see pic below) from Jap-Innovations. You could go the same route or I could send you my old resonator box which is just lying around in the garage. Replacing it with the MRT item was worthwhile, you can definitely hear more turbo noise and the recirculating dump valve is much louder. Throttle response is also increased as the ID of the MRT item is almost exactly the same as the two connecting hoses....it was a real tight fit .

The small pipe can be left not connected.. it is the pipe that connects to the boost solenoid and contains a small restrictor to help stop boost spikes etc..
It just needs air to suck into it/ come out of it and is fine disconnected (has been for about 50k miles on my car) the other is the pipe to the idle valve and you cannot block this off.

You need it to suck filtered air in, as you are running with a MAF (on the OE ecu etc) you need it to suck from the air intake (otherwise you can fit a small k&N as I have if not using th maf).

I did for a while replace the resonator with a bit of metal pipe.. 70mm it just (JUST) squeeses into the pipe on the turbo end and I then piped the breathes off rather than running them into the induction pipe (black flexi pipe connected to turbo) and used one of those holes for the pipe from the idle valve.

But to get you out of trouble for the moment just cover the hole in the resonator with tape and leave the small pipe disconnected.
