Default HOT CLUTCH?

Hi all
Crawling around the M25 in stop/start traffic (as usual) on Friday night. After a while, the biting point of the clutch got lower and lower, and action got more abrupt. Began to think it was going to give up, but once the traffic cleared and things had cooled down, it was back to normal!?? Anyone got any ideas on what could cause this?

cheers!
Dr Scoob

Riding the clutch would be my guess....especially in traffic. I try to keep a decent gap in front of me to allow me to use use 1st gear with clutch fully out and no accelerator being used....just let the torque of the engine pull you along slowly.

Possibly the hydralic clutch fluid overheating though on my BMW (typically on the M25 ) it used to make the clutch juddery, not change the bite point. Never had a problem with the Scoob.

When was the fluid last changed? Consider using a higher grade / more heat tolerant clutch fluid.

Fair point, and that's what I try and do so as not to knacker the clutch. The clutch probably got a lot more abuse than usual on Friday, but I've never had this happen before. Any ideas as to why it might happen - heat from the clutch plates affecting release spring? Cable stretch? Is the clutch gasping its last?

Cheers!

Cheers Graz, that could be a possibility. It was rather like brake fade! I'll check on the clutch fluid replacement - I doubt it was done at the recent transmission oil change...

Graz is correct. Happened on my 99UK turbo in traffic in Birmingham. Dealer changed the fluid for Dot 5 spec and it never did it again.

My MY99 always does this in hot weather when in traffic. It did not improve after the fluid was changed by the Scooby garage. Luckily the clutch never fails to disengage but I am always worried that it will!
