MY97 WRX / STi ECU Swap
What happens if....I fit a 280ps STi ECU to a same age 240ps WRX Wagon?
I am hoping for a gain in power (car is always run on Optimax + Millers), but I believe the wagon has a smaller turbo than the STi - would this result in overfueling?

Thanks stickymicky - the saloon still has the bigger turbo, right?
Is there a definitive tech spec guide for the Jap models- boost levels, turbo type, cam profile, etc?

You will need to fit a TD05 as the smaller turbo on the wagon will hit about 1.2 bar, which is near to fuel cut on the ECU AFAIK the injectors are bigger on the STI so thats another consideration One more thing is the majority of the internals in a STI were built stronger than the standard WRX The car will run but not 100% fit the bigger turbo and injectors and it will be a runner but the internals may need upgrading in the near future

not sure, my 97 wrx had a Vf22
most seam to have this
or possibly a vf23/22
what does the wagon have?
the wrx ecu runs 276bhp but not as much torque as the sti model (although mine was past the standerd sti specs with a pannel filter and a cat back 3" system when tested)

the 97wrx on my drive has the sti injectors ()dint think the wagon will have them tho)
the 97 wrx on my drive has a fuel cut of 1.45bar
the 97wrx runs power figures which are very close to the sti model on paper (20lbft of torque or so less), im sure the internals will be fine, as a side note, ive ran my car on a td04 for months at a time while killing my main turbo and its also been fine, although its been controlled with a dawse device
monitor fueling and knock and you will be fine

yes the wagon (if it is a wrx import) has the smaller td04 turbo. You could put the ecu in but you would have to put a MBC on to cap the boost and the iccle td04 wont like the boost settings in the map.
I have run vos chip + mbc with my td04 wagon with no probs
Upgrading to td05 today!

Following your advice I may try to find a WRX saloon ECU - but to be honest I am thinking about going the whole hog and buying a STi III R/RA! (see my post in General Technical).
Probably simpler / cheaper in the long run...

also the sti ecu will have higher rpm limit than the wrx as it has different heads/cams etc.. you will kill the engine in the wrx is you rev it to 8000rpm.

best advice i can give you regarding the ecu change freshstripe is...............
DONT!!!!
yes it will be fun .....for awhile.
if you do put in the sti ecu, start saving for another engine cos you WILL need it.
