Oil level
Been reading the threads about oil changes, having checked the dipstick on my car, the level is above the full mark. I get a hot oil smell after driving the car as well. What are the consequences of overfilling? Will do the oil change myself i think so i know how much has gone in.

There are two full marks on the dipstick, one which applies when the oil is cold and the very top notch which applies when the oil is hot. Is it over the very top notch?
I think the most common consequence of over filling with oil is a blocked boost solenoid (which controls boost, it's connected to the drivers side suspension strut) and connecting pipes. If this is blocked your car will feel sluggish and will not be running at anywhere near full boost.
Have you just had an oil change done? If so the hot oil smell could be spilt oil burning, if not then I don't really know what it could be.

If it's a MY99 or MY00 don't fill it passed the middle point on the dipstick. Subaru recommend not more than 4.3 litres (including oil filter). It turns out about right for me putting in 4.2litres because of the residual oil.
The later models take more oil and I don't think have the same restriction. Dunno about earlier MYs.
