Default Lambda move to downpipe

The lambda sensor for the early WRX is in the headers but I am thinking about moving my sensor to the top of the downpipe (like the later WRX) as my aftermarket downpipe has a hole for it there.

I thought it would be easier to earth the sensor properly at this location and I have also heard that it will run better with the slightly cooler gases behind the turbo. Is this true? Am I wasting my time?

Believe it can be done, sensor is different so you will have to buy a new sensor and leave the old one in the headers to block the hole.

But if you run with that sensor in the headers not wired up the exhaust gases will carbon up the end of it and it will become useless.. so you could leave the + and - connections and just remove the signal wire from it to the new one?

I wouldn't have thought the expense of a new sensor would be worth while until the current one needs replacing?

Sorry to contridict ya JGM

The sensors are identical, only difference is that the lead is longer on the one that fits in the headers, EGT's should be lower in the down pipe so in some respects there should be less chance of overheating, but IMHO there isnt much difference unless you are using an AFR gauge form the std sensor.
The lambda is only used on off boost running so location shouldnt matter.

I just knew they have different part numbers.. must be due to lead length then..

its also a good idea as the ends are known to come off the sensors and trash the turbos!!!

that in itself is a good enough reason to move it in my opinion
