On a classic shape STi car the front diff is free as supplied by Subaru. I don't believe that it was even an option part.

The plated front diff is available as an STi 'Sportpart' and is fitted after supply, it would not have come like that from the factory as a new car.

Would one of these plated diff's make the car feel differentl at low speeds? Mine feels like the the front of the car is skipping when using lots of steering lock, parking etc, and I've never felt it in others.

Certainly would, it has the same effect as trying to drive a type R with the dccd set in the 'locked' position. The car will hop and skip and clunk on a 3 point turn to the point that you imagine something is broken.

As soon as the drive is not in a straight line the noises etc will start. Unless you have a need of it to be like that [ can't think of one ! ] get it out of there as soon as possible for a much nicer-driving car.

Cheers David, that's put my mind at rest. Everyone who gets in the car gives me the "is it meant to do this" look and it was starting to get me a little worried.

So why do people put them in?? Mine was already fitted when I bought the car. The only other mods were 4 cusco braces and springs so I reckoned the previous guy must have preferred the car to handle more than big power.

Is it any good on the drag strip for example?

The Japanese do this because of their fixation with driving a 'rally car lookalike' and put on all sorts of outlandish extras that just about make the car undriveable. That's the way they like them. Rock hard suspension with pillow ball mounts etc etc. I have more susension travel on my coffee table than most Imported Subaru's.

If you have found front plated differential unusable, then could we do a swap for my open type front diff? :-)

Not a swap, - Sorry! To the man who needs one or wants one the front plated diff is worth heaps. I have gerzillions of free front diffs in stock here.

Assuming the question is aimed at me.

And we're accused of being cheap! How cheap do you want?

We probably do have a number of FREE free diffs actually, just that they came complete with a gearbox which isn't
