Mine (fitted with forged pistons) sounded like a diesel when cold. This decreased when it got upto operating temp, but didn't end. It was one piston which was slapping (18/100 of clearance, so a bit to much)

I hope i've given you some idea.

Piston slap appears mainly when the engine is cold, 1500 to 2000rpm is about the revs when the noise is higher..noise should go away when engine is fully warmed up On my MY97 uk turbo it was fixed under warranty with a new no4 piston, after 2000 miles it came back again.By now out of warranty so I had to buy a new block etc. The Dealer supplied the block at cost and Subaru paid the labour so I suppose it wasnt too bad.

The chief technician at the dealer said they will knock forever if left alone with no permanent damage other than the horrible noise it makes
IS HE CORRECT?
