Oil Catch Can or VTA - How much can it really help ?
Hi all,
After following a few threads on here I decided to VTA all three breathers. Had the techs just use some Marine Clear Tube and vented them towards the ground and plugged the holes where the now open ends used to attach to, the little railing with two tubes attached to I/C has now been removed as there are no tubes leading into it. I have a couple of questions:
1) If one was getting oil in the I/C before this process and now the oil will no longer be running in there how much RON octane improvement may this help....maybe 0.5 - 1 RON octane point ?
2) How long will it take for all the oil that was in the intake and I/C (previous to running the VTA setup) to disappear?....reason I ask is I noticed an almost instant improvement on KL after this mod....
3) Is there any reason to put a filter on the end of the 3 tubes VTA or is it ok
to just leave them open to the air pointing towards ground ? Is there anychance of anything getting sucked into engine etc ?
4) I heard that this oil found in the intake and I/C on standard setup can actually help to coat turbo and keep bearings well oiled etc in turbo.....any truth to this and by removing this oil from intake I/C are there any negative side affects ?
Cheers,
Ray

when you fit a filter, all it does is get blocked up from the inside with oil, might look mint from the outside, but inside it will clog up and die
i had this problem with a old nova where it just started pissing out oil every where, took a while to find that the nice shiney breather filter was clogged up from the inside

Thanks, well that keeps things nice and simple then Have to admit if this is really helping with det like I think it is has to be one of the cheapest / value for money mods one can make ! Obviously gets more expensive with a proper oil catch can setup but this VTA seems like its better for your car anway....

Its a mod Im doing in the next few weeks.
either going to use B&Q piping or get a length of correct dia. samco.
for a catch can Im going to use either an ex tin of sprite or 7-up as I have a green car.
a la this
if you want it to look good,
these are a bit pricier but you cant help but admit they look a damn site better

1) Don't know but must be better by a small amount as intake charge is not being contaminated any more.
2) The oil coating will take a long time to go if at all. IMHO you would need to clean the i/c and pipes of oil. I don't think that this oil coating will make much difference anyway. The problem is the oil vapour that reaches the engine and dilutes the intake charge.
3) When the engine cools there is a chance that air will be sucked into the breathers so if you don't want filters then use a catch can.
4) I would say that your turbo has a dedicated oil feed and water cooling. There is no need for anything else.

I've just installed my catch can so I can send pics to you if you wish?

I've had similar problems with oil causing det. Fitted a catch can that caught an awful lot and have been plagued with oil leaks. Save a long story.....I fitted VTA breather hoses and there's evidence that the crankcase pressure is building up and chucking out vapour from all 3. For me it's engine rebuild time
Some who've fitted catch cans report not seeing any oil in them after a period of time, my clear hoses were discoloured very quickly.
May be worth a closer look at the cause.

Thanks for the reply guys
Floyd, I would love to see some pics
Andy.F or anyone else care to comment on potential of something getting in my engine from the VTA open ended tubes with no filters etc at the end ?
I guess the oil coating in the I/C could potentially hurt the efficiency of the I/C and if it will not go away with time then I better give it a clean with a little gasoline
