Longevity Question – engine shot @ 75k???
First the good news – its not about a Scoob it’s about my dad’s V6 2.3 Audi.
Cyl 4 has failed a compression test at local garage and legitimises the huge oil consumption of the engine. [The main dealer ‘solution’ was to charge him £300 to replace ‘leaky’ rocker gaskets – twice the cost of another main dealer for same simple job and when I looked the engine is spotless – I’m fuming!)
Anyway, it’s a 1997 car with FULL main dealer FSH. Question – is this acceptable in a ‘high quality’ ‘well engineered’ 'low stress' car – I would expect 3 times that mileage before looking at such a problem…
Any recourse do you think?
[EDIT TO SAY ITS a BL00DY 1997 NOT 1977 - I am off work sick as an excuse!!!)

Perhaps get it stripped and inspected by an independent, respected engineering company, agreed with the dealer etc. and that their outcome will be binding?
That way maybe some come back if early failure, and none if thrashed / abused etc.

Of course, you could get this "fault" diagnosis in writing, let them do this change ( providing old parts as proof ) and when it is still in poor shape with same symptoms, take it back with the written diagnosis and insist they fix the PROBLEM/SYMPTOM under WARRANTY on the new work as they got it wrong, i.e. were negligent in diagnosis or execution!!
Don't volunteer an idea of the problem or tell them what work to do, as they then have a defense of "we did what you asked us to do / what you said was wrong !.
Been there, done that with certain Nissan dealers some years ago.
