Default UK 300 Gearbox into MY00 Classic.

The gearbox in my MY00 Classic is on it’s last legs (3rd Gear )
It doesn’t seem to like 300hp!

I’ve been offered a 12000 mile old box and rear diff. from a UK300.

My questions are…

1: Will it be a straight fit into my MY00 Classic, or will I be needing the flywheel, clutch etc.
and
2 : Is it worth fitting, ie. Is it any stronger than the standard UK box? – Or should I be looking for a STi 5/6 unit?

Anybody done this before? – Your advice would be much appreciated.

Thumbs up

Honest truth, if you havnt already changed the clutch, do it now, that wont like 300bhp or anything near 300lbs of torque, as for your gearbox, 3rd is always the first to go as it takes most of the strain, you will be best saving and rebuilding your gearbox with some stronger internal parts, probably more expensive than a second hand gearbox but it will cure your problem.

Tony

PS you will need to speak to a speciallist like API, they advertise on here so check out the banners!

Just changed ( and uprated) the clutch and flywheel a couple of months ago. - Bl**dy typical!
STi 5 / 6 gearbox and diff. is what's reqd. i think!

Anybody got one they want to sell me?

Or a 6 speed from the new WRX/STi. They are stronger than the 5sp I hear say.

Oh yes that they are
But they are also considerably more expensive (around 6k i hear new )
Plus they are heavier, longer, and more difficult to fit into a classic......
Do a search under projects, there may be a thread or two about fitting these to a classic.

Tony

PS, speak to David Wallis, i think hes gone from 5 to a 6 speed box

Piece of **** to fit a six speed into a classic. I got mine from a written off UK STi 03 for £1300.
Just make sure you get the gear linkage and propshaft from the doner vehicle too.

everything IS a straight swap, Trust me, I have done it.
I really don't know what all the fuss was about.
Propshaft bolts straight on
mounts are in same place (although uprated ones are recommended)
dam it, even the downpipe bracket lined up !
Clutch and flywheel don't need changing either. splines are the same.
speedo sensor just plugs in. (about 10mph out at 160mph )
your 00MY slave clyinder just bolts to the side of the new box, no adjustment necessary.

JFDI as I say...*

(Just ******* do it)

Is the rear diff the same?
should also state that the JDM box and UK box have different ratio's after 4th gear, and different rear differentials, this could cause problems me thinks?

Fiestaboy states (from the way I read it) that he has a UK 00MY classic (same as me, although a few more horses in mine )

I have not changed diff on mine, the ratio's are the same.

If however he purchases a JDM box, things get a little more complicated. !
overall gearing is shorter and diff's do not match (not so much to do with the gearing but the drop gears in the transfer case.
UK = 1.1:1 drop gears
JDM = 1:1 drop gears
UK DIFF = 3.454:1
JDM = not sure

Hope that helps...

A note to add, that with my current bhp the standard box made the car laggy and the gears were quite drawn out, mates were gone before I got on boost. Back then I didn't know any different and took it as the norm but nnow I have the 6 speed... well
It has MADE my car !! Period.

Fuzz,
Is the redline still around the 167mph mark then with the 6 speed box in (i know its 183 on the STi due to the slightly higher rev range).
The JDM box is ratio'd to 170mph with an 8k red line, makes for quicker progression (and faster movement of the fuel gauge )

Have not noted rpm, was concentrating on knocklink, EGT, GPS (for accurate speed) and speedo.
.. then ran out of straight tarmac.

ooh nearly forgot to add... the road, I was concentrtaing on the road too !!

I distinctly remember Bob R telling me that boost/ fuel cut was removed on my link, so do have to obey a few gauges now and then.

Sorry David - I think its all been answered - I'll probably be finding myself in the 'gearbox' buying market soonish (..) - At which point I'll call ya...

Particularly interested in the 'Fuzz2' solutions
Is that something that API can supply, or would you suggest an alternate route ?

Ta,

We specialise with parts from Japan, thus , we only seem to get JDM boxes. Be careful putting a 6 speed prop into a classic car as the one we saw here has the centre support off centre and puts a dogleg in the driveline. The one that we fitted was dead straight.
