Question Rattle/metallic vibration sound, Heatshield?

Hi,

A few days ago my car developed a very metallicy rattle / resonating sound! Doesn't always appear, most often after it's warmed up a little, seems to be at about 1500 - 1600 revs but mainly around 3100 - 3500 revs. I am very very sure the sound is coming from the underside of the car, parhaps around the front wheels or a little further back but hard to tell. Kinda sounds like a thin sheet of metal resonating against another bit of metal!

Can anyone help? What would you think?

Also if it is the heat sheild how can i tell which one? there seems to be a few under the engine and along the exhaust as far back as say where the gear lever sits.?

Also how do I fix it? Remove the heat shields? if so how? anyone got any guides for doing so? any other way of stopping this annoying sound (Unfortunately selling the car soon *sniff sniff* so don't really want to be forking out loads of money for replacement parts!!!)

Car is an MY96 UK spec Impreza Turbo.

Many thanks in advance!!!

EK

Mine does this also, in my case it's the heatshield on the up-pipe. I removed the turbo heatshield when I replaced the downpipe but left the underneath part in place. The underneath part is actually fastened to the up-pipe heatshield and I've recently noticed that the upper part of the up-pipe shield has come loose. Not sure how to sort/remove yet though. Listening to the rattle, I had previously thought it was caused by something loose underneath the car.

I had this exact same problem. uppipe heatshield seems to be attached to the uppipe. mine broke on one corner causing a rattle. i snapped the other corner off with a hammer and screwdriver (chissel) and removed it, job done.

Wasn't being funny Phil, I was being serious You should've seen me in action with a 4lb lump hammer and 12" extension bar on the rear strut spring cups gaining some clearance for my new 225/40/18 tyres - mind you, I do have a Mech Tech background.

Default Intercooler Intake

I had an unnerving noise on my Legacy turbo. It turned out to be the Intercooler Intake which had come loose. I think the early imprezas had a similar deszign but not sure.
Hope this helps
