Angry Driveshafts/CV joints

Due to split gaiters at both ends of both front driveshafts on my 94 Impreza 1.8gl I am looking at the possible need to replace at least one driveshaft (left) and possibly a cv bearing.

A knocking sound turning right and a grating noise from the brakes suggesting too much free play on the wheel both suggest the need for urgent attention.

Does anyone know how difficult this job is to do yourself (and where i might find out how) and approx. how much would it cost at a garage?

Rgds,
mikez
