Rattle when lifting off at particular rpm
Has anyone with an Impreza had an annoying rattle when lifting off at a particular rpm that sounds like it could be the gearbox/transmission but could sound like a loose heat shield or exhaust component?
Did you identify it or have any ideas on locating the cause?
Rgds,
Mike

looked at a scooby that had this (when I was looking at buying) the seller said hes tried to fix it and has had the problem since he owned the car, mentioned he thought it to be heat shield etc but could never find it, sounded more internal to me though

sounds almost definately like a cracked heat shield to me, normally the one around the first cat if its old shape, some years ago i had same problem, I cured this by removing the heatshield completely.

My MY02 STI does this. Has been doing it for ages. Bloody annoying.
Going in for the 40k service soon, so will mention it then.

Do you still get the noise when the car is stood idling ..And does the noise stop when you dip the clutch also....?.Or is it "Only" when its on de-acceloration....?.Kev.

no noise when idling.
you only hear it when you lift off the throttle and let the revs drop (usually around the 3000 rev mark).
you can hear this rattle coming from underneath the car but as soon as you dip the clutch is has gone. Re-engage the clutch and its back.
I had a new clutch fitted under warranty back in February but it did it before this and still does it now.
Any clues as to what it could be ?

If it is an old shape (pre-97) then take a look at the heat shield on the drivers side exhaust manifold. They crack and vibrate - it is a well known problem http://www.sidc.co.uk/faq.htm#3.3 and you can fix it by getting a new heatshield then spacing it out by a few mm. There's usually nothing to see unless you get right underneath the car as they crack right next to the fixing bolts.
Did they fit a new clutch release bearing when they did the new clutch? If not it could be the bearing or part of the clutch mechanism (it may go quiet under load).
I hope for your sake it's just the heatshield.

I had exactly the same prob with my MY01-At the time i was quite worried,as it sounded like pinking/det but I traced it to my turbo heatsheild rattling at about 3K revs on liftoff. It didnt appear to be loose at all,but it just vibrated through resinance. All i did was to give it a bit of a twist/pull at the base low down by the inner wing and it cured it.

Thanks guys, I think I have found the problem. Won't know for sure until I put it back together (other reasons) and try it. The first heat shield on the downpipe that is spot welded rather than bolted together is loose and free to rattle against the exhaust pipe. I have had to wedge a clip in it to 'fix' it in place.
