Default My Big-Ends are going... What options do I have???

Hello All

Started my car on saturday am and got a horrible knocking/rattle from engine 2500 -3500rpm, gets a lot quieter when warm but still there.

Its a MY93 WRX with 70K miles on.

Took it to PS and advised what I dredded, Big end Failing..... Ouch ..Boo hoo Sob Sob etc etc

I am now obviously looking at my options.. So far tis this

I have the option of buying a new 2.0 V9 STI short engine (block, crank, pistons etc), take out my engine, and put heads & anciallarys on new block, fit new Oil pump, Timing belt, head gaskets etc. Inspect coil packs and replace if required.

This will give me piece of mind as a new block and then I can further my tuning as better bottom end than WRX.

This will cost me about £2210 ex VAT, I am vat registered so don't pay the vat.

Second option.

purchase complete S/H engine from Accident damaged car.. Approx price for engine £750 Labour £400 approx... So say £1200 with oil...

This is a cheap option but hence not sure on history of engine.

I currently run
New VF34 Turbo
Full 3" Decat system
HKS FMIC
HKS FCD
HKS Air intake
Z4 ECU
4pots with Black diamond disk, tarox pads.
Car is in lovely condition inside and out.

I was until recently thinking of selling car and upgrading to a newer STI model.. Say 98 ish..

So keeping my lovely condition 93 WRX and having a STI bottom end is somewhere near getting an STI....

Would I be right in saying that if I say wanted to go whole sti engine, new block and find some heads I would be into ECU'ing and other problems....

Before this happended I was looking at Fitting Feul Pressure Reg and Knocklink and AFR then upping the boost to 1.3 bar. Currently running at 1.1

I look forward to your replies and help.

Cheers

I had the same dilemma recently, you may find some perfectly good 2nd hand engines around at the moment due to the 2.5l group buy. Might be better getting one of them i.e. getting one out of a working car. I bought a UK 2001 short motor for £400 it had done apparently ~40k, good deal ? time will tell.

ring lateral performance and get yourself 2.5 sti short motor. Not sure what price you have quoted there but it sounds as bit high.

I would rather have a 2.5 than a 2.0 and since you need to rebuild anyway....

2.5 would be nice, but then I am looking at injectors,ECU etc etc... Lots more dosh

Looking at getting a V9 STi block as new (50 Miles) £800.00

Getting fitted at API with complete rebuild inc new block, Timing Belt etc etc.

Steel STI head Gaskets

Total cost ALL IN £1900.00 + V.A.T

Quite Happy with that !!
