Bad air filter, how much damage?
Hi all
I got a prob!
Having not bought the car not long ago, i haven't had the time to check the air filter. When i bought the car it had a silly foam cone thing on, so the guy found a scraper and put the original set up back on. I asked him what the filter was like and he said he thought it as ok.
Anyway i took it of today because i've had typical MAF problems and i wanted too see for myself, and give the MAF a clean.
I found this! :0

Its even got little holes in it, so basically it looks like the reason why the donnor was in the scraper was because it was flooded, as there are dried soil marks all over the airbox.
Now, i have done approx 700 miles on this pile o ****e, i cleaned the MAF and all pipes out and i was cleaning alot of dust of the pipe walls etc. I droped the the filter and the dust that came out was unbeliveable!
Naturally i got a lift to the motorstore and got a champion filter straight away but do you think its done any long lasting damage, the engine was rebuilt 44000 miles ago and i don't want it ruined, the last thing i want is for the big ends to go or something like that!
Im really worried now!
Any thoughts guys?
Thanks

Damn. Thats bad. You would of thought that if hed gone to the trouble of going to get a box from the scrappy he'd had a check of the filter. Surely he must of had the filter out to get the box out the car anyway.
As to the damage, hard to say. The fact its only done 700miles on it would mean it hasnt done any bad damage, but might have knocked a bit of length off it. In most handbooks they tell you to increase the service regularity if its in dusty conditions, so do a good service and it should be fine.
Hope this helps.
Has anyone ever had the same thing happen?
