What can cause 2 big ends to go at the same time.
A friends 96 WRX has just cone and snapped 2 con rods,on inspection, the big ends have seized to the crank. The othet 2 are o.k.
My thought is that the oil pump is shot, causing the shells to weld themselves to the crank, then snap the rods. The piston tops are in good condition.
Is there a possability that det can cause this?
Any other ideas???????
easy

Well.........I actually saw it in the flesh today,No.1,2&3 have had some serious damage---1's scored badly,2's bigend had seized causing the rod to be obliterated into 3 pieces,3's big end part of the con rod is welded to the crank in 2 pieces and 4's bigend looks o.k strangely enough. All the main journals are scored badly also.
Upon visual inspection of the oil pump,it looks ok to the eye.
Is there a pressure relief valve inside the pump that can let go?
He said there was plenty of oil in there,as he checked the level at the side of the road after it went t1ts up.
Hasnt had an oil change in a while going by the colour of it(he's only owned the car for a couple of weeks and he hadnt got round to changing it yet)
He was cruising at about 70/80 on the motorway when it happened i think.
