Default The demise of my engine... :(

going to cross post here from 22b. http://bbs.22b.com/cgi-bin/ultimateb...1;t=002003;p=1

my car met with a little incident..

its not really a secret but my engine has been out of the car having some wilder cams fitted..

I have just spent all week off work and with big thanks to LegacyTurbs, Steven, Pat, Pavlo & Other non 'board' friends.

The engine was refitted and little niggles finally sorted. It was actually at the point where it was looking tidy under the bonnet.. and I was happy with it..

I even went to the effort of painting (hmm) the bonnet and bumper.. the car had its first polish whilst I have owned it in three years..

So.. Got it an MOT, taxed it and we were ready to roll with bedding the cams in, a quick run to stevens to say hi and on towards hull and all over soon bedded the cams in with just over 200miles.. this also gave perfect opportunity to sort the 'lunch the box' control - antilag.. (bit of a failure to be dealt with later we thought

so days later and we have a steady idle on 850cc injectors, result.. cold start is working.. and its getting to a point that I like..

we sorted a base fuel and ign map and things were going well..

Another 45 - 60 miles later we ditched the £8.50 mineral oil and poured in some motul and went out for a bit of boost mapping. My intentions were for anywhere between 2 - 2.5 bar boost depending on how things went (shouldnt need much more than two really)

It was really needing fuel aparently and pat really likes my new cams Thanks mark
it was now taking lots more ign advance too which was nice as its 7.5:1

So 1/4 bar of boost upto around 5000rpm and it was going well.. we then ran to 7000rpm.. things were going well.. it was getting awkward to map on these roads with the traffic .. and we had the pre scoobyshootout chinese.. so decided to head to the chinese..

after the chinese and a few beers (I wasnt driving.. that was legacyturb's job ) we set out for a bit more mapping..

now due to the roads we headed across towards goole and joined the m62 heading towards leeds, (trying to keep within radius of scooby owners with toolboxes and working cars )

things were going well.. so up to .5 bar of boost and it was allready feeling quick..

POP..

Boost hose comes off.. oh well.. dark motorway.. cruising along at 70mph Mr orrificer

sign for a services in 1m so we cruise into it.. opon entry to the lorry park we are doing 3000rpm with no throttle.. cool blown antilag pipe off.. 2secs later realise we cant as is pre throttlebody..

kill engine, check for obstructions.. nothing..

look down at bottom intercooler hose and its blown off and caught, dragged along the motorway and hoovered up the m62's road surface and decided to send these into my engine..

NOT HAPPY.

I managed not to kick the car, punch the car, smash, torch, abandon the car..

so was a bit fed up..

but after speaking to some people today Ive got nothing to loose by having a check of the insides of the engine, And had the kind offer of plenty of labour help, and cheap parts

So got home tonight and decided to take the inlet manifold off.. things dont look as bad as I thought they may be.

Will let you all know the outcome over the next few days and will take some pics..

I will not be posting this on scoobynet.. its alll open an honest though so feel free to, I would just rather keep my info in one thread..

really really gutted...

please check the same cant happen to your own car..we learn by our mistakes, but this could be one very expensive mistake.

well some pics...

also took some to prove the cars togetherness.. as plenty of people who saw it / heard it / went in it on sunday will vouch.. eagle eyed will spot twin aquamist pumps, relocated MSD, lack of ABS.. etc..

the **** on the cloth was found in the hose prior to the throttle body.

Gutted for you, I have been keeping an eye on your progress and this is a real shame. Good luck i will keep my fingers crossed for you.

I kept blowing the hoses off mine, all because of useless clips that came in the kit for the APS FMIC, So i changed them for some that we use on our Tank engines. They should do the job. LOL

Fortunately ive been lucky not to have dragged in any crap.
Mine went whilst mapping with Pat down near Basildon.

Anyway good luck and dont get too upset.

A good glass of red ensures the cuts to the fingers don't sting too much until the next day....
You know about these things; to take the heads off an Sti v3 MUST you take the bloody engine out, or can you get away with it in the car?
Fed-up of fighting the shear weight of everything on an Impreza, Porsche's are much simpler and 'lighter'!
What do you think David?

I DID NOT WANT TO READ THAT!
Is there no end to the grief of working on a Scooby?
I have a well used engine stand and a hiost etc, but lacking motivation!
Maybe I could just get away with jacking the engine up a bit having released the mountings?

Anyway, does this mean the job cannot be done unless you take it out?

What a drag!
Been quoted an all up cost to change the gaskets of £800 +vat, that would nearly buy an Andy f turbo......why do these things happen to me?
Anyway, hope you are back on track with the engine, and thanks for taking the time to help me.

911,

If you've been quoted 800 to change the headgaskets, but you have the hoist and stand... maybe you could get yourself more motivated. You could strip out more of the unnecessary weight from the engine bay whilst the motor is out, and the cost should be somewhere around the cost of the head gaskets plus maybe as much as 5 or 6 hours of your time (being a first time engine out).

You could potentially fit new headgaskets and a new clutch (possibly with a lightened flywheel) within the 800 quid you have been quoted for just the gaskets!

Sorry to read and see that David. Like many others (thousands!?) I've kept an eye on your progress pre/post TOTB2.

Fingers crossed the engine's not badly scored up.

New pistons needed..

Just gotta measure to see if they are stroker or not.

Not the end of the world, financially it is **** timing but i get bored of driving cars.. Fixing is much more fun (within reason).

I'm not too sure what to make of that lot.
The engine bores , though not presteen, not too bad?
Are you stopping there?
Did you do a compression check before the heads came off?

Default Keeping intercooler pipes on !!

David, Just read the thread re your engine problem. Real shame l hate to see broken engines for no real reason.

I've posted this before and maybe you have it somewhere recorded, but l'll repeat it anyway. Clean the intercooler hoses and pipes in the connection areas with something that evaporates dry [ I use cellulose thinners ] and then heavily coat the hoses with heavy duty, firm hold hair spray.. Reclamp the hoses properly and when the engine and pipes warm up the spray sets like concrete. Prevents any sort of blow off. [An old, not me guv, motor racers trick ]

David API, Good luck and get going again soon.

No, the hair spray was to put on your own hair whilst you did the head gaskets - I know what posers you Porsche types are
