Default Power cut-out in 5th

My car (My98 UK Turbo) has developed a worrying problem where if I am accelerating in 5th gear ~70mph it seems to cut power for a second or so. It doesn't seem to be doing it all the time but resonably often. There's no CEL or other warning lights just the power loss.

It seems to acclerate perfectly normally in every other gear right up to the red-line.

Anyone got any thoughts?

Sounds like the fuel cut is being activated by the ECU. It is activated when a maximum predetermined boost level is detected for more than 2 seconds (I think?). Typically more eveident in higher gears as the boost is held longer, especially if cruising at 70 then full acceleration is applied.

Assuming the car is standard then you may benefit from a boost solenoid clean (procedure can be found on here through the search). If you have a dawes etc give that a clean too with carb cleaner.

cheers for the quick response,

I will have a hunt under the bonnet tonight! Have also had it suggested to me that it might be a coil pack on the way out - anyone know how to spot the diff?

quick update:

I can get it to occur in 4th by shifting early and giving it a healthy dose of WOT - does this concur with the boost solenoid?

Yes if it is a missfire it is a slight cut of power eg a bit hesitent , if it is fuel cut it is total lose of power for a second and the back again , (throws your head through the windscreen). Try cleaning out boost solenoid , is the car standard or has it been modified eg dawes , do you have a boost gauge if so what boost is it at full wot , i think fuel cut on yours is about 1.25 bar .

Correct me if I'm wrong...I thought fuel cut on MY98 is 1.15 bar, which is when mine kicks in at the moment. I thought ECU is capable of reading up to 1.25 bar, which is maybe what you have it mixed up with?

I would clean the solenoid,my MY98 has done this a couple of times ,symptoms just like yours ,spray brake cleaner through the solenoid,if you connect both black and green connectors under the steering wheel it'll click over and over ,then spray ,job done
