Question Gearbox swopping: is this right?

How easy is it to take the frontdiff/box of cogs off the center diff of a non DCCD trans complete and drop on another box assembly?
Other than gaskets, does it simply unbolt, slide off, and reverse to refit?

What I am thinking is: if I have a spare box/front diff, and my current box breaks, can a spare box be substituted without stripping gearboxes etc?

Erm, it's a bit of a confusing question, but the one-word answer is probably "no".

How easy is it to take the frontdiff/box of cogs off the center diff of a non DCCD trans complete and drop on another box assembly?
Provided the spare box is the same general age/type as the original, it's certainly do-able.

Other than gaskets, does it simply unbolt, slide off, and reverse to refit?
You're thinking a little bit backwards when you talk about unbolting the 'box and front diff from the centre diff. It's really the centre diff that you'd unbolt off the back of the 'box assembly and refit to your other one. You can't (if this is what you were thinking) remove the box/front diff package while leaving the centre diff still on the car.

All that said though, with certain constrictions (you might have trouble fitting an MY99 'box to an MY95 centre diff and transfer case for example) there is a certain amount of interchangeability.

What I am thinking is: if I have a spare box/front diff, and my current box breaks, can a spare box be substituted without stripping gearboxes etc?
Erm, all depends wot you mean by "stripping gearboxes etc.". The 'box itself and transfer case need to be split apart, but you don't have to strip the gearbox down completely, no.

Sorry for the garbled question!
With the trans out of the car, and with a spare gearbox/front diff to hand, can I take the original centre diff off and place it onto another gearbox without having to open up anything?
Really, this is a bit of a dumb question as the best thing to do is simply to get another cetre diff and fit this to the spare box, so making a complete transmission up!
Going to be a bad day! Must stop rushing things....

911.................the simple answer is yes...................this is exactly what we do for the rally car's!!

p.s. obviously you have to ensure that the front diff ratio is the same in both instances!!!

The DCCD makes life too complicated,(to add to the Sti) though I do think it is worth it.
I might have the chance to get a good diff-less dog box soon. If I have a 4.44 fitted to it, then (if I have a box problem) I only need to change the box and not the bloody diff too!
It's this or a 6 speed Sti trans and be done with it. (the better option?)

They do as long as you also transfer the centre diff housing, in which case you can fit any centre diff to any ph1 or ph2 box as long as you use the matching selector detent mechanism and appropriate diffs front/rear to match the drop gears which are also married to their centre diffs.
The Sti 5/6 type R for example has a phase 1 style centre diff casing on a phase 2 main box casing.

Seems like we disagree on this one Alan I have fitted a phase 1 DCCD centre diff and casing to a Phase 2 UK MY99 gearbox. It's the set up I used at TOTB2 in August.
