Could well be the heatshields on the up-pipe. These are held in place at the top by the turbo heat shield bolts. With those off they can rattle if the welds on the two halves of heat shield fail (common apparently). Run your hand down the offside of the turbo down to the uppipe. You should be able to find the steel heatshields - see if they're loose. I tied mine back with locking wire but it doesn't last long.

Mine are driving me mad. Hopefully going to have them sorted this week.

cheers lads. would the up pipe heat shields be the ones that run from the passenger side under the front then back up to the turbo.?
if this is the case how do you remove them

I think the whole manifold has heat shields but the up pipe is on the driver's side and runs up to the turbo - downpipe then goes off it on the other side. If you look into the engine bay, from the offside wing, down past the turbo (to the right of it as you look) you should be able to see the ends of the heat shields - there's a couple of flanges sticking out where they used to bolt onto the downpipe heatshields. Stick your hand in (when the car's cold!!!!) and give them a waggle - that should hopefully reveal the source of the rattling.

Not sure how easy it is to remove them but mine have to go! They're now completely loose - sounds bloody awful.
