Would I be right in thinking that the only tools required to fit a quickshift to an MY99/00 box are a screwdriver, ratchet and 2lb hammer. And that you don't even have to get out of the car.

The descritpion on ScoobyMods implies you just pop out the ball joint, then push the new one in.

I thought there was a circlip or something, but maybe thats the older MY92-MY96 box.

I was gonna get my mechanic to fit it while the gearbox is out, but I don't think I'll bother now. Just in case there are any issues with the box/clutch after refitting.

I'll fit the quickshift myself once I'm happy with his work.

I believe that is correct yes.. just takes a lot of pulling/leverage to get the old one out of the ball joint and then hammering to get the new one in.

Only if you're a lazy sod. And in any case, you'd have to add a 12mm spanner, or another ratchet to the tool list.

Not my preferred method, but that is one way to do it, yes.

There is a circlip (or lockwire on some cars), it's on the underside of the linkage and it holds the balljoint in place. The most complete way to change the stick is to remove the clip and pull the entire joint out into the car. Once it's out, it opens up a bit like a flower, making the stick removal/refitting require far less effort, and while you're there you can also give everything a good clean and regrease.

Perfect time to do it, as you/he will have easy access to everything.

Easy job you will have no problem with. Just follow the advice above. A flat length of wood may be helpful, depending on the nylon ball joint you have to lever the gear lever up using a pair of vice grips clamped to the lever. Also a flat bit of wood to protect the gear *** thread when knocking it in.

Actually easier than you think.

Put the gear lever into 2nd gear and then push down it should pop out of the ball joint very easily.

If your replacement gear lever is is the same ie. altered fulcrum position. All you have to do is to temporarily screw the **** back on. Place the lever vertically on top of the ball join and then just whack it with the palm of you hand. It should go back in.

Just remember to transfer as much of the grease from the original lever onto the new one.

I managed to chang mine over in around 10 min. That also included taking the boot and surround off.

Done it on Saturday (MY00).

Only took about 20 mins with the help of my 3 year old son.
Infact he done most of it.

Very please with the result...there's nothing like a nice tight box

I got it from the US via Ebay for £35 + £12 postage

It uses a roller bearing bush rather then a rubber one....feels very positive and slick.
